Fired from the editorial board of a humor magazine because he isn’t funny enough, protagonist Vică remains unemployed until he accidentally reunites with an old acquaintance on the muddy streets of Bucharest in winter. Without wasting too much time on banter, he proposes that they participate together in a humor contest, an occasion for Vică to rebuild his professional life. Only that his new position as the member of a comedy duo doesn’t exactly fit him like a glove, and the informal contexts and the ever-distracted and hard-to-please audiences in front of which the two perform their gags don’t correspond with his aspirations. What is striking about this film for today’s viewer is the somber, claustrophobic, sometimes Kafkaesque register in which the actions of the characters are depicted. The public spaces covered in slush, the cold, precarious spaces they pass through, the cynicism or the indifference of others create a desolating universe, where humor has no utility whatsoever, and those who practice it are restrained to a decorative, marginal role.
